Lisa Su “Significant expansion of supply in 2027”… Supply chain planning 1-2 years → 3-5 years
HBM4 up to 432GB on MI455X… Samsung supplies next-generation products first
Global semiconductor company AMD is significantly increasing its supply of artificial intelligence (AI) accelerators. As Nvidia accelerates its market share expansion in the AI semiconductor market dominated by Nvidia, competition to secure cutting-edge memory, including high-bandwidth memory (HBM), is expected to become more intense.
Samsung Electronics, a preferred supplier of HBM4 for AMD's next-generation AI accelerators, has an opportunity to increase supply. With AMD announcing that it will significantly expand supply in 2027, attention is shifting to the domestic memory industry as even AMD Chairman Lisa Su visits Korea.
Lisa Su “Significant expansion of supply in 2027”… Supply chain planning 1-2 years → 3-5 years
According to Taiwan Central News Agency (CNA) on the 6th (local time), Chairman Su met with reporters in Taipei, Taiwan and said, “We have increased supply in 2026, and we will significantly increase supply in 2027.”
AMD is also prolonging its supply chain plan to meet the increasing demand for AI. “Demand is very, very high in the next few years,” said Chairman Su. “As very high demand is expected, we need more advanced wafer production capacity.”
According to CNA, AMD recently extended its supply chain plan, which was previously planned for 1 to 2 years, to 3 to 5 years. Chairman Su explained that the company is making longer-term plans with its partners to secure production capacity throughout the supply chain when needed.
AMD is increasing contacts with key Asian supply chains to increase AI accelerator production. Chairman Su met with major partners including Foxconn and TSMC in Taiwan. Not only TSMC, but also back-end process companies and substrate suppliers are increasing production capacity in line with AMD's production increase.
Memory supply, including HBM, is also tight. AMD is coordinating the required quantity of HBM for AI servers and memory for CPUs and PCs with suppliers and customers. In order to increase the production of AI accelerators, we have already entered into volume discussions with major component companies ranging from cutting-edge wafers to memory.
HBM4 up to 432GB on MI455X… Samsung ‘Preferred Supplier’
AMD's plan to increase production may directly lead to additional volumes to Samsung Electronics, which has started supplying HBM4.
Samsung Electronics and AMD signed a business agreement (MOU) for next-generation AI memory cooperation last March. Samsung Electronics was selected as the preferred supplier of HBM4 for AMD's next-generation AI accelerator ‘Instinct MI455X’. Samsung Electronics' HBM3E was also supplied to the previous generations, MI350X and MI355.
One MI455X is equipped with up to 432GB of HBM4. As AMD increases AI accelerator production, the amount of HBM4 required also increases. Samsung Electronics began mass production shipping of HBM4 in February and is preparing to supply it to AMD's next-generation products.
The cooperation between AMD and Samsung Electronics does not stop at HBM. Samsung Electronics' DDR5 memory is supplied to AMD's next-generation server processors and AI systems, and the possibility of cooperation in the foundry field is also being discussed in the future.
If AMD increases AI accelerator shipments, its business contacts with Samsung Electronics can expand from HBM4 to server DRAM and foundry.
Wafers from Taiwan, memory from Korea… AMD Supply Chain Expansion
AMD's production increase could also be an opportunity for SK Hynix to secure additional demand. Chairman Su said he is working closely with major companies to secure the necessary memory volume. Reuters reported Chairman Su's visit to Korea and mentioned Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix as major memory companies. The schedule for a separate meeting between Chairman Su and SK Hynix executives during this visit to Korea was not disclosed.
Chairman Su visited Korea after completing his trip to Taiwan. During his visit to Korea last March, he visited Samsung Electronics Pyeongtaek Campus and signed an MOU on next-generation AI memory cooperation with Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Jeon Young-hyun.
During this visit to Korea, we will meet with domestic neural network processing unit (NPU) companies and discuss expanding cooperation with the Korean AI semiconductor ecosystem. This afternoon, we plan to attend the AMD event held in Yongsan, Seoul.
As AMD has extended its supply chain plan from 1 to 2 years to up to 5 years, competition to secure HBM is expected to intensify when production increases begin in earnest in 2027. For Samsung Electronics, which has secured priority as the HBM4 supplier for the next-generation MI455X, AMD's chase against NVIDIA itself is providing a new opportunity to increase volume.
