HDHyundai Electric takes on a $1.98 billion production facility expansion, despite a dip in new orders in Q3. The company's substantial contract wins in the first half and a busy schedule supplying power equipment to North America have led to a surge in the order backlog, necessitating an increase in production capacity.
Late-cycle Growth Drivers: Distribution Equipment and New Ventures
The recent performance growth, led by ultra-high voltage transformers, has been bolstered by distribution equipment and new business ventures. The company plans to increase production capacity and meet the demand for North American power infrastructure through its Cheongju distribution campus and Ulsan transformer new plant, which is set to commence operations in November.
Q3 Results: Record Revenue, Despite Declining Orders
HDHyundai Electric's Q3 consolidated revenue, announced on the 27th, reached $11.799 billion, a 18.5% year-over-year increase. This marks a quarterly record. Operating profit grew 15.1% to $2.845 billion, with an operating profit margin of 24.1%. Operating profit missed market expectations by approximately 7%.
Financial Performance Highlights
The growth in revenue was driven by distribution equipment and new business ventures. This sector's sales reached $325.1 million, an increase of 85.8% from the previous year's $175 million. The rise was attributed to increased sales of distribution equipment in North America and power transformers for the domestic semiconductor industry, along with the $125 million revenue contribution from the newly commissioned BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) project in Anjwado, Sinan.
The core power equipment segment, a traditional stronghold, saw a 7.7% decline in sales to $542.3 million. This was impacted by the partial delay in transformer deliveries to Europe and the strengthening of the Korean won, despite which the distribution equipment and BESS businesses drove overall revenue growth.
In the third quarter, new orders totaled $98 million, a decrease of 19.1% compared to the same period last year. This was influenced by the base effect of securing $3.231 billion worth of contracts in the first half of the year.
However, the order backlog at the end of September increased by 4.2% quarter-on-quarter to $884.3 million. Notably, North America accounted for 68% of this total. Additionally, the long-term supply contract for distribution transformers signed with a major North American tech company began execution and delivery in the third quarter.
HDHyundai Electric: Strong Outlook and Production Capacity Expansion
The company anticipates a significant boost in revenue for its distribution transformer segment, projecting an increase from the current annual range of KRW 100 billion to KRW 1200 billion to a maximum of KRW 3000 billion next year. It explained that a substantial portion of this growth is already committed, making it challenging to secure additional orders due to production schedules being fully booked.
Expanding Production Capacity in Cheongju and Ulsan
HDHyundai Electric plans to invest an additional KRW 1980 billion over the next 26 months in its Cheongju Distribution Campus. This investment will establish a production cluster for distribution equipment and introduce smart factory and automated logistics facilities. The company estimates an annual revenue increase of KRW 2500 billion as a result.
The Cheongju Distribution Campus commenced operations last November. The existing first-phase investment has already increased the annual production capacity of medium- and low-voltage circuit breakers from 5 million units to 8.5 million units. This second-phase investment will further expand the supply range of distribution equipment.
In North America, there has been a rise in large-scale power infrastructure projects, such as AI data centers, which involve orders not only for power transformers but also for distribution transformers, circuit breakers, and distribution panels. HDHyundai Electric has been expanding its product supply range in the region, having secured long-term supply contracts for North American data centers.
HDHyundai Electric's Expansion Plans: Boosting Production and Targeting High-Value Products
The new Ulsan power transformer plant is set to commence full-scale operations in November, adding an annual production capacity of 40-50 units. The company anticipates a significant boost in revenue, exceeding 200 billion won, driven by the production of high-value products such as AI data center transformers and 765kV ultra-high voltage transformers.
In a strategic move, HDHyundai Electric is increasing the production of distribution equipment in Cheongju and ultra-high voltage transformers in Ulsan. With an impressive order backlog exceeding $8.8 billion, the company aims to expand the production capacity of both plants to meet the growing demand from North American clients.
"We are confident that our expanded production capabilities will enable us to capitalize on the increasing commercialization of AI data centers and the rising demand for ultra-high voltage transformers," said a spokesperson for HDHyundai Electric.
As the company gears up for this expansion, it will be interesting to see how these strategic moves impact its market position and overall financial performance. With a strong order book and a focus on high-value products, HDHyundai Electric is well-positioned to navigate the late-session selling pressures and margin call liquidations that often accompany such ambitious growth plans.
