HDHyundai Marine Solution: Market Reaction to Q3 Earnings
Despite posting record-breaking quarterly revenues, HDHyundai Marine Solution (443060) faced late-session selling pressure as multiple investment firms lowered their price targets. The company's earnings missed market expectations, with a notable decline in net income, prompting a series of adjustments to performance forecasts.
On October 27th, Hana Financial Investment reduced its target price for HDHyundai Marine Solution by 12.1%, from KRW 3.3 million to KRW 2.9 million. NH Investment & Securities followed suit, cutting their target by 9.7% to KRW 2.8 million. KB Securities took the most aggressive stance, decreasing their target by 27.4% to KRW 2.25 million. Notably, all three firms maintained their 'Buy' rating.
HDHyundai Marine Solution's third-quarter consolidated revenue reached KRW 650.1 billion, a 26.7% year-over-year increase. While operating income grew marginally by 2.2% to KRW 95.7 billion, net income took a significant hit, dropping 59.1% to KRW 32.6 billion.
Financial Performance Analysis: A Critical Review
Sales Exceed Estimates, but Profitability Lags
The company's revenue surpassed market forecasts by a substantial 8.7%, yet its operating income fell short, landing 9.6% below expectations. Additionally, the operating margin contracted to 14.7% from 18.2% in the same period last year, a concerning 3.5% decline.
Profitability Affected by Currency and Acquisition Costs
The profitability was impacted by the strengthening South Korean won and approximately $84 million in one-time costs related to the acquisition of global ship and power plant engine maintenance company, Golten. Notably, the foreign exchange assets held for the Golten acquisition incurred valuation losses due to currency depreciation, significantly reducing net profit.

#### Impact on Growth and Profitability
KB Securities attributed the decline in operating margin primarily to the strengthening won, one-time costs associated with the Golten acquisition, and the expanding share of lower-margin bunkering business in overall sales.
NH Investment & Securities lowered its profit estimates for 2027 and 2028 by 4% and 7%, respectively, to account for currency fluctuations. The adjustment in enterprise value due to rising market interest rates also influenced the reduction in the target price. Excluding the approximately $84 million in Golten acquisition costs, the third-quarter operating profit was deemed in line with market expectations.
HDHyundai Marine Solution: Strong Performance Despite Profit Margin Slowdown
Despite a slowdown in profitability, the company's core business segments continued to show robust growth. The Aftermarket (AM) division, responsible for supplying ship components and maintenance, reported revenues of $282.7 million, a 15.7% increase year-over-year. This marks the division's seventh consecutive quarterly record. The expansion of ship component sales and the Ecuador power plant maintenance contract contributed to the revenue growth.
Bunkering business revenues rose by 38.5% to $293.6 million, while eco-friendly and digital solution revenues increased by 17.3% and 48.1%, respectively. Combined, the core business segments, including AM and eco-friendly/digital solutions, posted a 18.4% growth in revenues to $356.5 million. The core business's operating profit margin stood at 26.7%.
The company is also witnessing an expansion in long-term maintenance contracts. The number of ships under new long-term service agreements (LTSA) for engine maintenance increased by 80 vessels in the third quarter, with the related order backlog rising approximately 21% from the beginning of the year to $586 million.
HDHyundai Marine Solution signed an agreement on October 8th to acquire Golten for approximately $331.5 million. By leveraging Golten's overseas maintenance network, the company expects to expand its business beyond the existing group affiliates to non-affiliated ships. Additionally, it aims to enter the market for maintaining power generation engines used in data centers.
Financial Outlook: AM Services and the Shipping Industry
"The LTSA (Long-Term Service Agreement) fleet is steadily expanding, and with the rising share of dual-fuel engines, increased engine production capacity within the group, and the expansion into the data center sector, we anticipate a continuous rise in AM (Aftermarket) service revenues," said Yu Jae-seon, a researcher at Hana Financial Investment, in a report issued on June 27th.
The report highlights the growing importance of AM services in the shipping industry, with a particular focus on the increasing demand for dual-fuel engines and the subsequent impact on aftermarket maintenance and support. With the expansion of the group's engine production capabilities and the diversification into new sectors, such as data centers, the outlook for AM service revenues appears promising.
This development is expected to drive further commercialization and yield rate improvements, especially in the early trade of these specialized services. However, market participants should also be mindful of potential late-session selling pressure and margin call liquidations, which could erase any intraday gains.
As the shipping industry continues to evolve, keeping a close eye on these AM service developments will be crucial for investors and analysts alike.
