European Oncology Conference: ESMO 2026 Unveils Antibody and ADC Clinical Data

From June 23rd to 27th, Madrid will host the annual European Society for Medical Oncology conference, where domestic pharmaceutical and biotech companies will present their latest clinical data on cancer treatments. The conference will feature a range of studies, from randomized controlled trials for bile duct cancer patients to early-stage clinical trials for bispecific antibodies and antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), as well as additional analyses of existing clinical trials.

The spotlight will be on ABL001, a bispecific antibody developed by ABL Bio, as its phase 2/3 clinical trial results for bile duct cancer have been selected for an oral presentation on June 24th. Compugen, a US-based therapeutics company, will also present the findings of its 'COMPANION-002' study on the same day. This study compares the efficacy of combining ABL001 with paclitaxel versus paclitaxel monotherapy in patients with advanced bile duct cancer who have received prior treatment.

Additionally, Hanmi Pharm, Aimed Bio, and HLB will showcase their cancer treatment research, with HLB presenting three studies on its oncology portfolio. The conference promises to provide valuable insights into the latest advancements in cancer treatment, particularly in the field of antibody-based therapies.

Late-stage Trial Results and Regulatory Updates

The median progression-free survival (PFS) for the combination therapy group was 4.7 months, significantly longer than the 2.6 months observed in the monotherapy group, according to the results released last April. However, statistical significance was not achieved in the overall survival (OS) analysis. Compass Therapeutics attributed the impact on survival data to factors such as more than half of the control group patients transitioning to Tovasemig combination therapy after disease progression.

Discussions surrounding the approval process are also underway. The company revealed on September 22nd that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had recommended conducting a trial to demonstrate survival benefit prior to approval. Compass maintains that additional trials are not necessary for their approval application, citing existing clinical data and treatment demand as grounds for their position. The company further explained that they will continue preparing the application and engaging in discussions with the FDA.

Early-stage Clinical Data Release

ABBL Bio will also disclose early clinical data for ABL111 and ABL503, which it is jointly developing with Novabridge Biosciences. ABL111 simultaneously targets Claudin18.2 and 4-1BB, which is involved in immune cell activation. On the 25th, the company will announce additional safety and efficacy data from a Phase 1b clinical trial of the candidate substance in combination with nivolumab and chemotherapy as a first-line treatment for metastatic gastroesophageal cancer. This candidate is currently also undergoing a Phase 2 clinical trial as a combination therapy.

Late-session Selling Pressure: ABL503's Dual Targeting Approach

ABL503, a dual-targeting antibody simultaneously targeting PD-L1 and 4-1BB, will be under the spotlight on the 23rd with a focus on optimizing the dosage for solid tumor monotherapy. The data presented will be based on the clinical phase 1 data, reviewing the dosing conditions.

Hanmi Pharmaceutical, a key player in the industry, will showcase its own dual-targeting antibody, BH3120, which acts on the same targets as ABL503. The presentation will cover the results of the dose-escalation part of the clinical phase 1 trial for patients with progressive solid tumors. Additionally, they will disclose the clinical phase 1 data for HM97662, a dual inhibitor of EZH1 and EZH2. The data presented will be the clinical results based on the dosage for patients with progressive or metastatic solid tumors, selected through biomarker screening.

Early Trade: Aimed Bio's ADC Candidate

In the ADC field, Aimed Bio, a company known for its innovative approaches, will release the follow-up data from the clinical phase 1 trial of its FGFR3-targeting candidate, AMB302/BHV-1530, on the 23rd. This study, conducted in patients with progressive solid tumors, aims to evaluate the safety and initial anti-tumor activity with increasing doses.

Biotech Breakthroughs and Clinical Insights

"Biotech company Biohaven announced that initial anti-tumor activity was observed in patients with FGFR3 overexpression, regardless of the presence of FGFR3 gene abnormalities. This revelation adds to the growing body of evidence supporting the potential of their innovative therapies. Further details on this clinical study will be presented during the upcoming conference."

HLB's US subsidiary, Eleva Therapeutics, is set to unveil three groundbreaking cancer research studies. On the 26th, they will present the rapid oral results of the THRIVE study, a phase 2 clinical trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of ribociclib in patients with metastatic thymic epithelial tumors who have received prior treatment.

In the field of hepatocellular carcinoma, a poster presentation on the 25th will reveal the CARES-310 subgroup analysis of the ribociclib and camrelizumab combination therapy phase 3 trial. This study examines the correlation between early antibiotic use and treatment outcomes in patients receiving the combination therapy or the comparator drug sorafenib.

The ReFocus clinical trial, investigating lirifugratinib, will feature a post-hoc analysis focused on safety. An electronic poster will present the findings of an analysis exploring the relationship between prior immunotherapy treatment experience and the risk of mucosal and skin-related adverse events.

Diverse Nature of Upcoming Announcements

The upcoming announcements encompass a wide range of topics, from comparative trials related to the approval process to early-stage clinical trials for bispecific antibodies and ADCs, as well as sub- and post-analyses of existing clinical trials. Each announcement will focus on different key aspects: Tovasimab will highlight survival data interpretation, early-stage candidates will emphasize safety and dose confirmation, and sub- and post-analyses will explore factors associated with treatment efficacy and adverse events.

Implications and Context

The significance of these announcements will vary depending on the specific research objectives and developmental stages of each study. Late-stage trials with robust survival data may prompt increased investor interest and potential commercialization opportunities, while early-stage trials may face greater scrutiny and margin call liquidations if safety concerns arise.

Stay tuned for further insights as Bloomberg provides comprehensive coverage of these critical industry developments.
