SanDisk's $50 Billion Share Buyback: Riding the AI Storage Demand Wave

Sandisk's Strong Performance: Focus on Data Center Growth

The data center revenue increased by 61% compared to the previous quarter, accounting for 43.5% of total sales. While operating cash flow decreased, adjusted free cash flow, including prepaid expenses, saw an increase.

Sandisk, a leading U.S. NAND flash memory company, has embarked on a significant shareholder return initiative, driven by the expanding demand for storage solutions in the AI infrastructure space. The company's data center business has been a key growth driver, generating over $63 billion in cash from operations during the quarter and allocating $50 billion towards share repurchases.

According to Sandisk's financial report for the first quarter of its 2027 fiscal year, released on October 29th, revenue for the quarter ending October 2nd reached $110.31 billion, representing a remarkable year-over-year increase of 378% and a 23% growth compared to the previous quarter.

The data center segment was the primary growth engine. Revenue from this sector surged to $4.82 billion, a 61% increase from the previous quarter. Calculations based on the company's disclosed figures indicate that the data center's contribution to overall revenue rose from 33.2% in the previous quarter to 43.5% this quarter. During the same period, approximately 88% of the total revenue growth originated from the data center segment.

Western Digital's Strong Performance and AI Investment

The company's quarterly report highlights the positive impact of its AI investment expansion, which has driven an increase in demand for high-performance products. Western Digital attributes the year-over-year revenue growth in its data center segment to price increases and higher shipment volumes.

"The allocation of supply to specific customers and markets is a key strategic decision for SanDisk," the report states. "We are entering into long-term contracts with certain data center and edge customers, committing to multi-year purchase volumes. These contracts are expected to enhance revenue predictability and supply stability for our customers, though they do not eliminate risks associated with customer demand and market conditions."

Cash Flow and Market Outlook

The performance growth has also resulted in a significant cash influx. Operating cash flow for the quarter reached $6.36 billion, a substantial increase from $488 million in the same period last year. Despite spending $5 billion on share repurchases, the company's cash and cash equivalents at the end of the quarter stood at $5.136 billion, an increase of $374 million from the previous quarter.

This strong cash position provides Western Digital with financial flexibility and could potentially drive further commercialization and expansion in the market.

Financial Performance and Outlook

While the company's cash flow remained strong, it decreased when compared to the previous quarter. Operating cash flow saw a decline of approximately 10.7%, and free cash flow, adjusted for asset acquisitions, dropped from $7.083 billion to $6.390 billion. The reduction in cash inflows from customer prepayments and deposits, which shrank from $1.938 billion to $465 million this quarter, had a significant impact on these figures.

Excluding the impact of cash transactions related to production joint ventures and customer prepayments, the company's adjusted free cash flow, a non-GAAP metric, increased by approximately 13.1% to $5.696 billion compared to the previous quarter.

SanDisk provided an optimistic outlook for the next quarter, projecting revenue between $12.2 billion and $12.6 billion, an increase of approximately $1.2 billion to $1.6 billion from this quarter's revenue. The company's ability to sustain its data center-driven growth, generate cash, and maintain its capacity for shareholder returns will be key factors to watch in the upcoming quarters.
